  Fluids in science and technology. Basic physics of fluids, continuum hypothesis, shear stress, pressure and surface tension. Newtonian and non Newtonian fluids. Classification of flow phenomena. Streamlines, pathlines, streaklines. The equations of fluid motions. Essential vector calculus. The continuity equation. Navier-Stokes equations. Physical description of dimensionless parameters. Applications of Navier-Stokes equations. Bernoulli's equation and its applications. Classical exact solutions of Navier-Stokes equations. Survey and discussion of approximate methods. Elements of lubrication theory. Basic boundary layer analysis. Turbulence.

• Objectives:

  The lectures present and illustrate the fundamental principles, methods and modeling approximations that form the basis of fluid mechanics. Students are stimulated to gain a mastery of the topics and to develop the mindset of an effective problem solver in fluid mechanics.
